The Prime Minister falls, Doctor Who falls, Android falls, The Free Internet falls, and I do a bit of painting and get ready for an holiday.

Painting

Did some painting at the summer social with work, which is more than two dozen people now. So much bigger than it used to be.

Enjoyable enough. The boss picks pretty good people, all of whom I’d otherwise not meet at all really being remote. Beats working for a day.

They have a recipe: Here’s how we draw this particular picture.

Everyone’s painting ends up much the same, within a pretty tight variance. All end up with something that’s not displeasing, even though hardly anyone paints normally, even the graphics people.

The key here I think is the subject of the image. Something easy to draw is key. Very few curves, mostly straight lines, easy vivid colors. Easily identifiable subject even if it’s drawn badly.

If your lines and form are wobbly and weirdly angled then yeah, that’s indeed what these trees are like. You just draw a slightly different tree.

Sky, haze, and ground in acrylic. Then chalk up the tree-trunks for some reason, before painting ’em white. Add some trunk-shade and flecks, do grass then flowers.

Easy recipe. Everyone gets a passing grade. Nobody’s embarrassed coz they can’t draw a nose.

Good first painting session since school. Maybe I’ll do another one in another 30 years.

Holiday Plans

I will be in Malloca for a few days very soon. In particular in Pollencia, but I’ll have a car and the island isn’t big.

I hope to spend most of it writing in an air conditioned hotel room or reading by a pool or on the beach and there’s a boat trip planned.

But I should also try and talk to people and explore what the island has to offer I guess?

Anyone local wanna meet for dinner or drinks? Any events in the first half of this month worth checking out? Or anyone ever been there and wanna suggest something particularly fun or educational or meaningful they enjoyed?

What’s the oldest thing on the island? What’s the coolest? Where are the best bands?

I even bought some actual books printed on actual paper. Its a bit sad, but DRM these days is somewhere between hard and impossible to break, unless you own Amazon hardware, and the trees will just have to take it.

They also don’t drain the battery.

I think I’m moving to paper in general. Mostly only reading in bed anyway.

Which is ironic, because I will definitely take the paper books to a charity shop when I have read them so they will be shared, whereas if they gave me a DRM-free copy I could read with my open hardware I doubt anyone other than mewould read it.

Doctor Who Cancelled?

No Xmas episode for Doctor Who, and indeed it sounds like nobody has any ideas for it’s future at all, so it’s up for grabs to anyone who putsin the best tender.

Can we crowd-fund some way for Charlie Brooker to run it for acouple of years? Make Philomena Cunk or Barry Shitpeas be thedoctor? 😆

If they’re not doing the Xmas special then I wonder if anyonewill address The Bad Wolf Doctor at all?

Could be that the Billie Piper Doctor never happens. Just completelyignore those final few seconds where her face appears after theregeneration?

Would have been better not to have those few seconds of film inthe final show if they’d known it’d be a total reboot next up. To just end with the regeneration energy and no clues for next season’s Doctor Who.

Probably wouldn’t want to open the new rebooted show with aregeneration scene. Focus on new companion till she meets new Doctor.

I think it needed that special to join the edges really. So sadit wont’ happen. Hopefully whoever wins the tender will want to do a short Bad Wolf Doctor episode as a prequel to the new seasons.

Hopefully in Xmas 2027? A long wait indeed without that xmas episode this year. Already been more than a year.

I should cancel my BBC license and give the money to Big Finish until the new show is in place maybe.

The fans are sad and lashing out saying RTD and Disney killed it with money and razzmatazz and glitz taking the focus away from the story.

But of course it wasn’t cancelled on account of how it was too glitzy.

It was cancelled because the CEO of Disney changed, and the new guy doesn’t get it, so he rug-pulled the productiontwo thirds of the way through the multi-year season arc.

RTD did an emergency edit that tried to promise a xmas specialshow with Billie Piper, in the hope of cornering the BBC intocommissioning more.

He had a few vague ideas about how to bridge to a new show, nothingconcrete. Murray who does the music mis-remembers and says there’s “multiple scripts” when RTD just said many ideas. So then RTD getsaccused of lying and gas-lighting by the fans.

Anyway, the BBC and Bad Wolf failed to come to agreement for moreshows. The script was never written because the show was never commissioned even though there were multiple different ideas and pitches.

Bad Wolf is just too expensive now since they’re used to Disney money.

I guess Bad Wolf studios shuts down now? Maybe then can do a Blakes-7 remake or something.

So what killed the BBC-Wales/RTD/Bad-Wolf doctor who is becoming reliant upon Disney money and Disney CEO changing.

It sounds like the tendering process is basically a charter requirement if they break up with the existing production team, thanks to free-market private-ownership tory wankers who can’t bare there being a thing they can’t bid to own.

Seems it usually takes about six months to a year, and most of the time BBC Studios themselves end up winning the tendering process because they frankly have the skills and equipment andexpertise to do these things at scale on a budget that few others can muster.

So there’s a far chance we get to next spring and they say okay then, we’ll make it ourselves with BBC money and BBC staff after all.

And then, yeah, target date 2028 for the 65th anniversary seems most likely coz it’d be a rush to do it in six months even for the BBC and they’ll want something on that day.

October 2027 is the earliest imaginable date for new shows now.

Xmas 2027 seems more likely.

More likely still is October 2028, by which time it’ll have beenover 3 years since new TV episodes and the show will be celebrating its 65th birthday.

Thanks for bringing it back RTD. It was fantastic.

What a great two decade run.

Here’s hoping someone else does at least as well.

My Doctor Who Pitch

My pitch if I ran a TV production company would be something like:

Twelve episodes a year of 3-episode serials: That keeps the number of sets you have to construct down. It gives each story the complexity of a movie and time to breathe without the frantic pace. You can have one every season of the year.

You gotta remember to focus on the companion. This isn’t really a story about The Doctor, it’s about the companions asking the question, Doctor Who?

Episodes should generally start with a companion’s face or escapade coz they’re the ones we’re identifying with as we figure out who the doctor is.

At some point in 2027 you’ll cast and announce a new doctor.

This is when you call Billie Piper in to film and release a webisode which is just the regeneration into Billie so far: her going “Oh, hello?” Then shaking her head and saying “oh hell no” and shaking harder until she shakes the face off into the new man or woman you picked who says “Oh, that was close”.

That change into the Bad Wolf Doctor was just bad without a capstone xmas episode: So a one minute tik-tokable short to announce the newbie frees you of it.

Then you can start ep1 filming and release nearly a year later on the 65th anniversary, with a story that focuses on the companion getting into trouble and meeting The Doctor.

Cast nobody famous. The production is about making stars not finding them I don’t want anyone having preconceived notions about the character from seeing the actor in that other show even it it was a really good one and they’re great.

Earthbound cross-time time-travel story for serial one to pickup new companion, intervene in an aliens vs aliens space-war in serial two, go screw up history and fix it for the third and aliens endangering companion’s family for the fourth.

When they’re 3-episode serials you only need four a year. Different writer for each.

Back to cliff-hangers between episodes in each serial of course, with stories about the nature of time and space and getting along with other cultures and running up and down corridors and scary monsters and of course the question “who is The Doctor and how can they fix this without guns or violence, with just a screwdriver and two hearts worth of compassion”.

The Doctor is some weird looking older dude, more importantly vivid and strange and scholarly than handsome. He has a big coat and no question marks. Then he can change clothes but with the same coat always have the same look. He needs to be able to doa good arrogant rant at himself while he thinks.

The companion is curious and brave and young enough to be naive and surprised and energetic. Doesn’t do what she’s told. Wonders off against orders. Maybe sometimes bombs things.

Obviously you keep the blue box and the tune and make a new style screwdriver.

You need to do the behind the scenes shows too. Not sure if they make or cost money, but they are brilliant for the geeky fandom. That may be why it came back last time.

Anyway. Sadly I don’t own a production company.

I did cancel the TV license in the mean time. Give the money to Big Finish instead. These audio things are expensive. I’ve bought bundles before. Anyone have favorites? I lose track of which one’s I’ve heard.

Government Checks Your Photos For Porn

The government want to scan all your photos to see if they are porn.

I see the prime minister and home secretary are lying, just blatantly lying, about the existence of technology which can tell how old someone is and whether an image is porn or not.

They claim this technology already exists in phones and just needs to be turned on.

I mean, judges at trials haven’t been able to describe what is or isn’t pornography, but apparently I guess they should have just turned on the software switch in their phones! Easy!

No phone can know it’s operator’s age. Even if the phone’s owner is registered, it can’t know if it’s being operated by it’s owner or not.

The PM and Home Sec are lying that they think there’s no reporting, no data-collection, no spying, no monitoring, involved in their impossible imaginary tech they demand must be implemented in 3 months.

They are lying that adults can turn it off without having to register the owner of the phone and it’s ID with a central database.

Never head anyone even mention the environmental consequencesof burning power to pass every image a camera takes through a large neural network to have it be classified as porn or not, so at least they haven’t had to lie about it being free and easy and not burning energy to classify every image taken in the UK.

Good thing they have little chance of being in power when their deadline hits and the tech companies have failed to turn on the imaginary software switch to do impossible things.

Sadly, Burnham’s government will probably do much the same.

Private Messaging app Signal has a reply:

The UK government’s demand that all content on all devices sold or used in the UK be scanned on the presumption of nudity, using a dystopian combination of age verification and content scanning, will not safeguard children. It endangers us all, whilst strengthening Apple, Google, and Microsoft’s market dominance and their control over our most personal information.

Government Tries To Ban Kids from Social Media

O’Brien on the radio thinks that its okay to ban kids from Youtube even though their exam revision videos are on youtube, Because the revision videos will just end up somewhere else.

He thinks though that the suicide encouragement and terrible anorexia mutual support will not simply end up somewhere else I guess. 🤷

“No downside to this at all” he reckons. 🤣

“Nobody sensible can be against this ban”

This is what irks me most. The absolute refusal to see any issues at all in the ban. Just refusing to understand that there’s any support, help, or encouragement for kids on these forums. That they are only places for radicalisation and bullying.

Banned Sites will be:

TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, Twitter, Threads, Facebook and Kick.

I note that Bluesky didn’t make the blacklist. I expect it’ll be added during debate. Can’t list everything though, so the kids will surely just go to whoever isn’t listed? 4-chan seems to not be included? What a strange list.

I don’t use any of them myselkf, besides Youtube. So won’t be forced into ID checks for them. My youtube account is itself over 18 years old, so don’t think they’ll even ask.

Callers to the radio who are parents are happy because now, when their ten year old says “Can I have a phone, can I have instagram?",they apparently feel ‘supported by the government’ in saying no.

Could we not achieve that support without all the surveillance infrastructure and corporate monopolies for ID-providing services?Just by having official government advice without any enforcement that children shouldn’t have these ten apps until they are seventeen?

Seems pretty ridiculous that parents feel like they can only say no to their kids if it’s backed up by the government and it’spolice and armies.

Don’t get me wrong, I certainly think y’all should abandon those ten apps and come join me on the free internet, away from corporate ownership in free unowned spaces where no big money players can control the playing-field.

Take away from big-money that feed which they use to point your kids (and you) at whatever scape-goat target they want: from migrants to trans people, from the disabled on benefits to kids using mobile phones.

But they’re talking about installing a gateway on the entireinternet and giving the government the power to decide who is allowed to use it or not.

That isn’t going to get you away from those monopoly capitalists, it’s going to entrench them and give them a cosy relationship with an authoritarian government that’s about to change to being both authoritarian and also racist and sexist and nativist and far-right-wingwhen Farage gets elected.

We want to break up these monopolies, decentralize the power they have, and destroy all advertising.

This will do the opposite of that: It is an attempt to enclose the internet commons for corporate interests. It will do that.

It can not be done in a way that protects privacy and anyone saying it can probably has shares in Palantir or similar who will expect to be paid to run these government gateways on internet publishing and who will then leak all your data that they lied about collecting.

As Matt Green says, satirically,

In fact The Prime Minister held the press-conference announcing the new policy in the toxic waste dump itself. He was then pelted with huge gobbets of radioactive goo by the denizens of the dump who may or may not be real people or in fact automatons created by the mad man who rules the place with the express purpose of destroying the prime minister and everything he stands for.

🤣

UK Government Collapse

The guy in charge of the UK’s defense has quit, saying he can’t do the job in this dangerous world with these budgetary constraints.

First we should note that quite some of the danger in this new dangerous world is caused by ‘defense’ spending by the UK’s so-called allies like America and Israel and their attacks abroad, and so-called adversaries like Russia and their wild plundering and war crimes.

Adding more weapons the UK can use to support and extend all those battles ain’t making the nation safe or secure at all. Quite the reverse.

Then you gotta look at what defense spending actually buys.

To the extent you buy missiles and airplanes and guns and ammo and drones from your so-called allies or so-called adversaries you fund their war machine to no real benefit in security or national ability for yourself.

Sending the nation’s wealth abroad in return for a more dangerous world with more battles to fight.

Next you gotta look at the amount of money the UK spends to host America’s nuclear missiles while lying that they are an ‘independent’ nuclear ‘deterrent’.

Not independent, and likely not a deterrent. Certainly unusable in pretty much any conceivable circumstance other than ‘UK has gone bad and thinks mass murdering millions of people is okay’.

Doesn’t even leave us able to actually build these things if, say, America goes rogue and starts wars of aggression for oil rights.

Next remember that tank warfare is last century’s warfare.

Tanks last like a day in the battlefield now before they’re blown up by drones. To the extent you’re spending on tanks, you’re wasting money. Especially if you aren’t even building the tank and so building sovereign expertise, just buying it.

Likewise warships really.

Much defense spending is justified by a kind of Keynesianinvestment. The spending is supposed to grow the economy as well as defending the nation. But this only works if you use the money to build local factories and employ local workers and advance local capacity. If you just buy planes from the EU or America, you get none of that. You’re spending to boost your competitor’s economy instead.

So the UK ought to be reducing to almost zero spending on buying arms from abroad, nuclear arms, tanks, warships.

The defense spending should be on UK capacity to build drones and anti-drone tech. Which means British chip-fabrication plants, British motor-factories. British metals and plastic and screw factories and I dunno what else it takes to build a drone but some of that.

In-UK spending on UK workers to boost UK economy. Not abroad.

Whether building all that costs more or less than the wastedmoney we give mostly to our competitors now is hard to say, but none of it is really about what proportion of GDP the country gives to the defense.

Then finally we have to remember that the reason he’s quitting is as much to do with political posturing and rats leaving a sinking ship as Starmer’s government generally collapses.

Andy Burnham will solve pretty much none of those actual defense issues.

Andy Burnham Wins

The Makerfield by-election is over.

I don’t live there, but if I did I think you gotta vote Labour in order to destroy this Labour government.

Which is in itself pretty mad. Demonstrating the utterly broken nature of the whole political system.

This is surely the only circumstance in which I switch away from the Greens.

As I said last month, the Greens absolutely should have stood and spoke in front of every camera pointed at the constituency. Dunno that they managed the second part. I didn’t see much of her myself, certainly.

Anyway, the point is that there’s only one candidate at this election which has any chance at all of changing the direction of this government.

None of the others might be Prime Minister by autumn. Nobody else who wins can do that. There’s only one candidate who can probably unseat the failing prime minister.

Would be voting more in hope than expectation of course.

He won’t be very different. Certainly he’s the same on Israel’s genocide, on taxing wealth, on fiscal rules preventing government investment, on private industry being better than government owned industry, on capitalism, on the bond market, on the monarchy, on the pointless drug war, on conflating protest with terrorism, on the house of lords, on AI, on Free Software, on copyright, on age-gating and surveilling the internet.

But maybe that one difference, “public ‘control’ without ownership of industry” is at least a bit better than just Starmer thinking the state is powerless against American AI? He might try a bit harder to build more houses?

So not voting in expectation of anything really changing here, but voting for the only candidate who will even be in a position to try.

If you dislike Starmer and prefer any of the other candidates, if you prefer Greens, or Conservatives, or Restore, or Reform, or Lib Dem, or anarchy or antifa or woke, then you should vote for the Labour Party candidate to cause Starmer’s downfall.

You should only be voting against Starmer’s Labour Party if you are happy with Starmer’s Labour government and want Starmer to stay.

Insane election. 😵

And only like 75,000 people even get to mark a ballot.

“Restore” are the splitters from Reform (who are in turn the Nativist right wing party splitters from the Conservatives).

They left Reform because Reform weren’t racist enough for them, mostly. Their vote count is key here. Will their vote be higher than the Labour/Reform margin?

I thought probably would be.The Restore Party being the spoiler that forces the PM out of office by splitting the nazi vote and allowing in a challenger to the PM.

And the voters of Makerfield appear to agree with the assessment.

It was 55% Labour, 35% Reform.

Even Restore and Reform put together couldn’t beat him.

Not even a question of the Restore Vote splitting the right to let Andy inin the end.

Just Burnham winning with 20% of the vote as his margin.

Wonder how long till the Leadership election.

This could be the quickest an MP becomes leader ever 🤣

And then Starmer did indeed quit.

He nearly cried as he gave up his job. He’s lost the confidence of of the parliamentary party and says he’ll stand down.

“Two year Kier” they’ll call him.

Looking like Burnham might be coronated without even a Labour Party MPs vote then. Just nominated unopposed.

That’s probably bad for him really. Needs some kind of media spectacle in which he can lay out his plan for the country.

“He [Kier] was a man of integrity” says the caller to the radio station 😆

My god.

Lying to get the leadership, lying about his intentions, lying constantly through his premiership even right up until that Friday when he was lying that he won’t quit and will fight a leadership election.

The only PM that lied more than Starmer was Boris Johnson.

Man of Integrity my arse.

Main differences between Andy Burnham and Kier Starmer:

  1. Kier has more gray hair and parts it on the other side.

  2. Kier has no Northern accent

  3. The pubic haven’t seen that much of Andy yet and he’s relatively unmonstered so far.

  4. Something about busses and public control.

  5. Burnham was a bit less good friends with Mandleson than Starmer was probably.

Burnham’s team have a plan of some sort coming in a book here described in the New Stateman

“The Productive State”

They do seem to have some grasp of what’s been going wrong for 40 years and why the state and the working class have been impoverished and indebted while the billionaires became trillionaires just from passive income.

The solution?

The institution to rebuild the supply side is the public corporation: operationally independent, commercially mandated, borrowing in its own name against its own revenue streams, delivering investment at lower cost and priced progressively.

It’s a pretty good article really. I am sceptical that it’s really anything like the scale of change needed to reverse the flow of wealth from state and workers to the elite classes but maybe that’s just a question of doing it at scale then?

It’s a pretty good article anyway.

The Onion Takes Over Infowars

Alex Jones is dead! Popped like a balloon in the front seat of his car!

Thank goodness The Onion have taken over his old show. They have the video to prove it.

Properly hilarious that Alex Jones’s fake-news conspiracy channelwas bankrupted by the court for it’s lies and slander and that the satirical fake-news website ‘The Onion’ bought it in the fire-sale.

Now the Infowars channels are mocking the old Infowars presenters and viewers.

Puppet Song

Nice little revolutionary song with puppets:

What are we gonna do about these elites? We’ll all get together and hit the streets. We’re never gonna break! We’re never gonna bend! That’s what we’re gonna do about them.

Entropy

3 Blue 1 Brown really is great isn’t he?

Part one video this week is on Shannon entropy and the limits ofdata-compression but he’s heading for something deeper by part 3.

Government Internet Surveillance

Lorenz knows what’s really up with these terrible suggested laws:

If lawmakers are serious about protecting children, they should roll back age-verification policies and start targeting the systems that incentivise mass surveillance. Instead of building an internet where every user must ID themselves before being able to speak or consume information, we should work to build an online world where everyone, especially young people, can engage freely without being exploited for corporate profit.”

Colour

Really great article on colour-spaces and how your eyes work vs screens and pigments:

There are colors that I want to show you, but I can’t. They exist in the real world. You probably saw some of them today, but I can’t show them to you on a screen. A digital photograph can’t capture them, and your screen can’t display them. No game you’ve ever played has contained them. Unless you have specialized equipment, they are entirely absent from the digital world."

Starmer Review

Media Lens continue to be the only people worth listeningto on the state of the world’s media and how they areobviously just propaganda machines for big capital.

The media’s whitewashing of Starmer’s complicity in Israel’s Gaza genocide and crimes against humanity is stunning. Searches of British newspapers using the Nexis database reveal that in the first 24 hours of Starmer resigning, there were 1,485 mentions of him. Only 30 of these had any reference to Gaza. Several of these were reports of Irish rap trio Kneecap saying farewell in Irish to Starmer"

Android Going Closed

If you are running Android 8 or higher, a virus has been installed on your device and is silently awaiting remote activation. Over the past few months, devices around the world have been infected with this novel strain, with as many as 4 billion Android handsets and tablets estimated to have already been contaminated, meaning that around half of all humanity may be at risk from this threat."

Fediverse

When the whole corporate internet is surveilled andage-gated, when they demand to see your ID to do a singleshitpost, when they enshitify the sites until they are almost entirely adverts, there will still be the freeweb. A space owned by nobody, without adverts, withoutsurveillance, and without a central authority governmentcan force to check your ID with Palantir for every post.

Here’s some stuff I boosted on Fediverse this month.

AI

all the criticism has been said, all the takes been had. The only metaphor I have been finding consistently useful for understanding what is happening with people and “AI” is addiction, and specifically gambling addiction.

The corruption in the government and technology sector has metastasized to the financial system, which may turn a crash into a great depression.

Elon Musk and the chatbot industrial complex have jailbroken the economy. You and I are just exit liquidity.

Internet

It’s 1998, you make a website in the copy of frontpage express that came with your computer, it’s just like Word and it’s very easy, you figure out how to upload it to the couple megs of web space that your ISP gives you (the instructions are on their website), you visit your site in your browser and everything’s fine and the site’s readable and everything looks the way it should

🦝 “Wow, if it’s this easy in 1998, I bet it’ll be even easier in 2026” you think to yourself for some reason

So, uh, yeah…

I am leaving mozilla

It was the best place I ever worked, along with some of the smartest, kindest people who I will miss dearly, but there comes a time when you have to leave.

What happened to the fight for the internet?

A new blogpost from me. I believe the fight for keeping the internet free is more important than ever but also under more threats than ever.

And the irony is, centralization is partly to blame: people don’t feel like the internet is theirs anymore.

But we can’t leave it there.

We HAVE to act.

For our sake, for our kids’ sake, for ourselves, for the future.

Social Media Age Gates

As a teenager I was intensely isolated from my peers. I had been removed from education by a parent and, along with my siblings, spent all my time at home. I had little in the way of homeschooling.

The internet, and in particular social mediums, ended up giving me a lifeline. It was my connection to the outside world and gave me a way to socialise, as well as signpost me to subjects I could then look up and learn.

“gIvE kIdS tHeIr cHiLdHoOd BaCk”

so… you mean fund recreation centres and out of school activities? NO

sports clubs and increasingly walkable cities? HAHA NO

playgrounds, green spaces, skate parks, libraries, any non-commercial spaces where kids don’t have to pay to exist? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

oh… enforce realistic safety standards for urban SUVs and light trucks? WHAT HAS THAT EVEN GOT TO DO WITH THE PRICE OF EGGS?

so how exactly does one give kids their childhood back? BAN SNAPCHAT TIKTOK AND INSTAGRAM

oh… what about 4chan or stormfront or kiwifarms? DON’T BE OBTUSE WE CAN’T BAN THOSE HOW WOULD THAT EVEN WORK??!?

Capitalism

Our society could, for example, ensure that every baby had access to diapers. But where’s the profit in a society that ensures needs must be met? Instead, it’s more profitable to ensure that some babies risk wallowing in filth.

Instead, it’s more profitable to ensure that some babies be shot to death.

Starmer Review

#STARMERBINGO draft.

Keir #Starmer is quitting. For 2 wks, UK media will be full of political obituaries.

But nearly all of it will be lies.

Starmer is a fraud. He is a puppet of the #LabourTogether conspiracy, a chameleon with no political skils or values.

He became PM only because the media class colluded to falsely present him as a resposible adult.

So as they bury Starmer’s career, watch out for the truths untold.

Pls help improve my STARMER BINGO card, of unfillable numbers.
