Fascism, Local Elections, Trumponomics and Tariffs - April 2025
I made a new Observers cartoon, there were local elections, and Trump’s Tariffs seemed crazy.
Me
Some stuff from my diary on the fediverse
New Cartoon Diary
The good news is I actually managed to do some writing this month instead of just staring at the page wondering if my brain would ever work right again and marching off to get snacks.
The script even managed to be workable in the fresh light of the morning and I recorded the audio next day.
Less good news is all the work on the animation engine had left it so complicated I couldn’t remember how to use it.
😆
I spent a few more days doing the animation stuff.
Standing all day walking around doing animationwork in VR makes my back ache!
Godot’s VideoStreamPlayer plays ogg files but does not allow skipping them:
Seeking in Theora videos is not implemented yet (it’s only supported for GDExtension-provided video streams)
I really need to be able to skip the video to different frames because (A) during animation-edit user is goingbackwards and forwards with time control a lot and (B)during 360 3D render it has to do a panoramic scan across the scene with time paused.
That’s all no good. No viable video player in Godot.
So instead I had to add a multiple-image flipbook. Fine. We’ll just have to have hundreds of individual images and pick the right one based on the global time.
The system I had built for rendering the 360 stereo-visionversion on multiple cloud servers is a terrible mess that tookquite some effort to remember how to use.
Rented 16 cloud GPU machines overnight.
Still the render takes days and days.
And turned out wrong.
It turns out the render is putting the right eye at the top instead of the left eye 🙄
I’m sure I fixed that bug like 3 times now.
Hummm.
Oh. I see. Damn. This explains why it was ending up backwards even though I thought I’d fixed this bug once:It is reversing the eye position only depending uponwhich direction the source camera is facing.
Face backwards along the Z axis and it’s correct, face forwards along the Z axis and it’s reversed.
Jeeze. Never ends does it. Bug after bug.
I had:
c.Position += new Vector3(-Mathf.Cos(camAngle+colAngle), 0, Mathf.Sin(camAngle+colAngle)) * eyeSeparation;
And I should have had:
c.GlobalPosition += c.GlobalBasis * new Vector3(-Mathf.Cos(camAngle+colAngle), 0, Mathf.Sin(camAngle+colAngle)) * eyeSeparation;
And because of that I had to re-do about 36 hours of rendering.
🙄
Oh well. Think it’s fixed at least. That’s nice.
And the final cartoon is released! Check out “Releases” below.
UK Local Elections
Labour’s entire election campaign and parliament has looked like an endorsement of Reform: Hey, we hate refugees too! We also want to pick on pensioners and the disabled! We would never undo a brexit! We’ll suck up to Donald Trump just like Farage does! We’ll stop the boats too!
Then Reform do well at the elections, because Labour keep reinforcing Reform’s message.
Then First Past The Post kicks in. Under First Past The Post with five parties, you can win a landslide with 21% of the vote.
Greens did pretty well, growing solidly, but they never got the affirmation of their policies by government like Reform did, and don’t have their own TV channel like Reform has GBeebies.
Green Leader
Zack seems to have a pretty good message and to be keen and energetic to be Green Party leader.
Carla and Adrian have been pretty good, but they haven’t succeeded in getting the Green Party messages all over the press.
Think the UK public and press might not really be sophisticated enough to understand a job share. Probably better to have one person full time.
Dunno if the incumbents will even stand again. Four years is a long time for Green Party leaders. Usually supposed to be every two years.
Zack seems likely to get my vote unless someone better turns up. Would be really great to get the country fired up about the party somehow. God knows the other parties are all absolutely awful.
Here is Zack answering Owen Jones’s questions.
And he was talking to Novara this week too.
You can join the Green Party and vote for him!
Or for any other candidates!
Zuck’s Threads sucks
I was under the impression is was next to impossible for a fediverse server to change it’s domain name?
But Facebook have done that with their “threads” server anyway.
Have all the Threads follower relationships broken now they’ve changed it? Quite possibly.
It won’t affect anyone on our server of course, since they were already blocked here.
Now their new domain at dot com is blocked too.
If they move to yet another domain we’ll block that as well.
Defederate
Also this month Liz Truss and Open AI both announced they are going to make “social networks”
Hard to imagine any reason why you’d want to use either. Truss reckons hers will be “Free Speech” but of course she can’t allow illegal posts any more than Twitter can.
OpenAI presumably mostly want training data. Hard to see why anyone would deliberately choose to post their notes to be used by OpenAI without compensation.
If either try to federate, I shall of course be defederating them too.
Zuck’s AI Sucks
Can a capitalist system build an AI which isn’t biased?
Or will it’s makers always bias it towards the capitalist system which made it?
Hope you weren’t planning to have your AI do too much of your thinking for you, or rely on it for answers to political questions (which is to say all questions)
Coz Mark Zuckerberg is pushing his company and its AI model to the right, first because he’s appealing to the current US administration and second because he sees himself in competition with an increasingly extreme and right wing Musk.
These AI companies are all trying to twist their machines to give the answers their capitalist masters would give.
Quote from that Creep Zuck, more or less:
The average American has three friends and is lonely, but with the help of AI we can fix that! Get it down to just one or two easy.
Perplexing Perplexity
Speaking of AI companies being obnoxious:
Perplexity CEO says its browser will track everything users do online to sell ‘hyper personalized’ ads
Dalliance CEO says he will never use that browser and will continue to use whatever blocks adverts and tracking of all kinds most effectively.
Dalliance CEO says Perplexity CEO can take his browser and fuck off.
Trumponomics
“Insider trading” is what they call it when someone has advanced knowledge of economic numbers or a policy change and trades on that knowledge.
So what do you call it when a president posts a note to all his followers saying “Now is a good time to buy” and then two hours later announces an economic policy change that pumps stocks to their highest single-day rise of the decade?🤔
Outsider trading?
Inside out trading?
I wonder if he’ll ever tell his followers it’s a good day to sell?
It still seems like 10% tariffs on everything and a trade war with China is still pretty bad economic news to me, even if it’sa bit better than full on global trade war. Yet this makesthe markets rebound.
The real thing to note is the ships not crossing from China to the USA right now, they are like the dog that didn’t bark. Even if the tariff war ended tomorrow, that hole in the supply lines where the ships aren’t is still making its way slowly across the seas. Going to crash into America next month like a wave of nothing where there should be something.
I keep hearing Americans saying that US has to do this tariff because China has been manipulating the Yuan for a long time, as though America never adjusts their interest rates or does quantitative easing.
Strange to say that China is doing currency manipulation in such an accusatory tone when literally every currency is manipulated by changing the supply or interest rates on a monthly basis.
This month Gary’s economics had a good video on Tariffs and Trump.
Rich countries can buy more than poor countries, so the US buys more from China, so there’s a trade imbalance. So money/wealth flows from the rich country to the poor one.
So America is in growing debt to China. Tariffs can be erected to slow that flow. You can tax imports instead of income. Great.
Trouble is that tariffs are a regressive tax, and so replacing income taxes with tariffs makes taxes more regressive, moving the tax burden to the poor.
Gary takes us through that Progressive and Regressive taxes are.
Initially tariffs were supposed to be targeted at those with highest trade barriers, but Trumps crazy formula targeted the poorest countries with the biggest trade deficit instead. A theoretical attempt to move the worst jobs in the world into America.
Would have killed some of the poorest people in the poorest countries. Make clothes expensive in the US to try and make the US have sweat shops again!?
Gary finds it so insane he can’t barely stop himself laughing.
“Low competence implementation” is his euphemism.
“God knows how many Cambodians would have died just to make it so Americans can’t afford trainers”.
Could have made Nike bankrupt.
“What would you do if you were the chancellor” is a question he gets asked a lot. His answer is that he’d not just make up economic policy and rewrite the economic system on his own on his youtube channel. He’d actually game things out with experts and international cooperation.
Trying to do it just by some geeks making up policy in their kitchen is stupid.
Markets crashed. Nobody thinks this can go on.
Rich people buying discounted stocks. Gary was buying, mostly on reflex, expecting change in policy.
He’d have sold US bonds if he had any. Everyone else was. It started to look like US could go bankrupt.
“Thank fuck, they decided to back down”
“Donald trump is manipulating markets on social media”
Don’t listen to what trump says, don’t panic into selling, don’t let him use tariffs to disadvantage the poor, stand together.
What happens next? Probably deal with China, but if not price increases in the US making the poor poorer. But cheaper prices elsewhere, UK and Europe maybe. Which could reduce inflation and so interest rates.
Who will build a factory in the US now? The rulers seem crazy.
Whole world might well have to rearm because the US isn’t their ally any more?
Whole world must reorient their economy to be with China instead of the US now? The US isn’t dependable.
It’s like international policy run by the Fyre Festival.
It’s not just Trump. It’s not even just the US. The whole world is run by idiots.
Gary wants to go on holiday. He’s knackered.

New Observers Episode!
The aliens discover a planet where the owners steal the fruits of the worker’s labour by imposing an arbitrary social hierarchy to divide them and turn them against each other.

On the 28th of April 2025, whole sections of Portugal and France and Spain suffered power cuts!
Nobody seemed to know what was going on!
So I did a five minute tarot reading to definitively find out, discovering a failure at international cooperation and investment that’s left the systemover stretched on a heating planet, and that the failure might finally prompt the nations to invest to fix it.

Reading
Read Lyn Alden’s book “Broken Money”.
The problems and issues with using bank debt as a global monetary system were a surprise to me when I first discovered them in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.
“Money” is mostly not notes and coins. Banks don’t hold your money, they fractionally reserve it and create 95% of all the money that exists out of nothing.
All that stuff that isn’t notes and coins is interest bearing debt, and there isn’t enough money in the system to pay the interest.
It must mathematically, inevitably, lead to collapse.
Alden goes through some of that problem. Describing money as a ledger, either managed by book-keeping or by physical scarcity.
She goes through some history of how money evolves in society. How the limitations of physical money (mostly that it can’t be transferred quickly at the speed of communication) lead to using credit and ledgers with balances at trusted traders, and eventually banks. The collapse of Breton Woods with the ending of the Gold Standard and the problems with the current Petro Dollar system.
Some of these problems are in the media spotlight at the moment: The US printing money to trade for foreign products negatively affects their balance of payments, and is bad for the American worker. Deskills their economy and makes America dependent.
Trump says he wants to fix that, but its hard to see how it could be fixed while Dollars remain the world money standard, and America therefore has to get dollarsout into that system somehow. And gets to make money for nothing to swap for real world products.
Their free money also pays for the wars that America pursues and funds all over the globe.
Another problem: Constant money printing and resulting inflation causes monetization of real estate, pushing up the price of housing and making people not even want there to be cheap housing. They celebrate the cost of housing going up as though it enriches them.
Likewise stocks, and equities and real estate and art and jewellery. All inflated stupidly due to the constantly devaluing worth of money.
Also the problems already mentioned that I learned about in 2008. All the money in the world is owed at interest, and to pay that interest more money must be created, at more interest. The whole system doomed to collapse and enriching the worst of us till it does.
Is the solution to return to a gold standard? Presumably not, gold is too hard to transport, and already collapsed into bank credit once in the 70s.
More controversially she wonders could it be Bitcoin? Not “crypto”, which is just scams and more tokens printed out of nothing to enrich those doing the printing. But Bitcoin specifically, separate from Crypto, as a token which only real-world work can create. Nobody gets to print Bitcoin for free. It has no company or country controlling it. It has deliberately limited supply. It is a bearer asset like Gold which can be transported around the world at the speed of communication.
The last 3rd of the book looks at how Bitcoin works, how it’s different to Crypto, and examines some of the obvious objections.
I remain unsure that Bitcoin could really be a new global reserve currency, but I also remain convinced that something has to, because continuing to use the dollar is certainly doomed and causes innumerable terrible difficulties until it does.
And what else is there?
Can we finally make Keynes’ Bancor?
Until we find something, money remains broken. Like in the title. And that breaks many otherthings too.
Watching
Doctor Who
Hurray! It’s new Doctor Who time!
Robot Revolution:
Name a star and become it’s queen and so get kidnapped by some lovely 50s robots in a lovely 50s style rocket wrecking the house in front of Mrs Flood.
What an opener.
Belinda seems immediately competent and ready for nurse work.
Complicated time line doesn’t make much sense.
Robots live in peace with the Belinda Citizens,Then Al arrives and causes the Robot Revolution,Then the robots go and get Belinda.
She sends them back for Alan.
They fetch him and arrive before they left.
And somehow the place has been named after her since before any of all that?
Hummm.
Bouncing around trying to get her home but never managing to land at the right location. That was the Fifth Doctor’s trick to keep ’em from leaving 😆
Seems like it’s for a reason this time and the whole world is destroyed.
Intriguing start.
Lux
The Doctor facing segregation, by mostly ignoring it and apparently by shining.
Loving the callback to Neil Patrick Harris’ character with the laugh. A new god from the pantheon to vanquish.
Nice gag with adding emotional depth to the character to add more dimensions to their 2d drawing too.
Heheheh, I thought the doctor was gonna climb out of the screen into my living room! And then he did. But it wasn’t me, it was some other fans :(
Strangest kind of forth wall breaking I’ve seen. Having the character discuss his own adventures with the fans. 😆
Mrs Flood chasing him all through time somehow again too. Curious.
The Well
Heh. Nice sudden force sky-jump. Jump straight into adventure and away from the tardis.
Ah, finally a quarry that actually is a quarry. They’re in a mine.
Aliss does a pretty good job of being vulnerable and also scary.
Earth is gone.
Ahh, it was called “Midnight”. We get to see Tennant scared.
It’s behind you! Though midnight is right in front of you surely? Behind is your six? 6am is a scarier time than midnight though really.
It knows his name!? What, his name name?
Pretty high body count. Violent deaths flying around the mine. Scary one.
And it’s escaped! So I guess there’s a monster loose around the galaxy that knows The Doctor’s name 400,000 years from now.
After earth is presumably destroyed.
Doesn’t exist any more.
Also liked Belinda explaining the concept of a thing being behind another thing to everyone.
😆 So complex.
And all the nurses have to speak British Sign Language despite the fact nobody has heard of Earth let alone America.
Confusing.
Lucky Day
Amazing. What a show. All the best episodes barely have The Doctor in them at all. 😆
Great to see Millie back. I love Ruby so much, she’s brilliant, and to see her so happy and then traumatized and heartbroken is a wrench. What a bastard. Unbelievable levels of idiocy. Throw it away with Ruby just for clicks. 🥴
Great scary lizard dogs and also great fake lizard dogs.
After putting the internet fans into Lux, RTD is putting the internet trolls as villains into Lucky Day.
Don’t really get why Conrad wouldn’t eat theantidote though. If he knows he’s lying, he ought to lie about that too. Only reason to not take the vaccine is if you believe the lies you’re spouting.
Best show of the run.
So far.
Three more next month!
Black Mirror
Watched the new Black Mirror.
Nice initial episode, would be at home with any of the other seasons.
A dark story that feel all too true about the enshitification of a brain implant. Constant upgrade treadmill, adverts, degrading of service and promises.Actors showing resigned frustration very well.
This is the world we are building 😬
The one with Capaldi in it was ace too.
I still have one more of them to watch

AI
Daniel Kokotaji and Scott Alexander have a AI forecast/prediction.
They reckon the AI can murder us all around 2030 or so if it’s not properly aligned.
They reckon the programming agents to become better at programming than the AI researchers before 2028. Then it’s a AI race between US and China.
We predict that the impact of superhuman AI over the next decade will be enormous, exceeding that of the Industrial Revolution. We wrote a scenario that represents our best guess about what that might look like.
It’s informed by trend extrapolations, wargames, expert feedback, experience at OpenAI, and previous forecasting successes.
Investigating the economics at OpenAI and it’s impossible demands vs return:
OpenAI currently requires more money and more compute than is reasonable to acquire. Nobody has ever raised as much as OpenAI needs to, and based on the sheer amount of difficulty that SoftBank is having in raising the funds to meet the lower tranche ($10bn) of its commitment, it may simply not be possible for this company to continue.
Sam Kriss describes a nightmare AI utopia, great writing:
It’s a bright cloudless day and you’re meeting your beautiful submissive girlfriend for a breakfast date. You’re meeting her at the soda fountain. You’re meeting her at the ice cream parlour. You’re meeting her at the drugstore to share a malted milk. You’ve been going steady with your main squeeze and now you’re meeting her at the folksy chrome-and-cream diner on Main Street in your quiet walkable 98% white small American town. It’s always a bright cloudless day….
Gaza
The role of the corporate media is no different. It is there to create the illusion that we are the masters of our own thoughts. It is there to make us think we have reached an independent understanding of the world, even though that understanding has been carefully crafted for us from birth. It is there to cultivate a worldview in us that aligns precisely with the privileging of a tiny corporate elite whose wealth depends on the relentless pillaging of the planet for their benefit.
America Is Over
———————– * Living In Interesting Times - Charlie Stross
Charlie Stross on the market crash and trump’s presidency:
Trump’s narcissism won’t let him admit imposing tariffs on the entire planet is an idiotic idea. So he’ll blame China for the market crash and the galloping stagflation he’s just kicked off. Most of the goods, materials, and products that he’s choked the supply of have no domestic US sources, or none that can be ramped up in less than years. For example, China just choked the supply of rare earth elements to the USA in retaliation, which used to be mined in the USA … but it takes years and billions of dollars to build a new mine and refinery. He’s applied sanctions to Taiwan, which sliced $300Bn off Apple’s market cap in 24 hours because Taiwan’s TSMC supplies most of the world’s bleeding-edge semiconductors. They’ve been trying to build a plant in the USA for years, but are still years away from producing anything: it’s not just the machinery, it’s the skilled and experienced technical staff.
Nina has been describing American descent into Fascism well:
the administration can “deport” over two hundred people it swears are “gang members” without due process, which it then summarily proceeds to do while filming its blatantly illegal activities for propaganda purposes. While the planes are in the fucking air, a judge orders the government to turn them around, and the regime first pretends it doesn’t understand the order, then refuses to obey it while claiming that because the planes were out of US airspace, the court has no jurisdiction to order them to return to America.
The instruments of repression, security theater, and white supremacist ideology Trump is employing to create his own patchwork dictatorship in America were embraced and installed by a largely bipartisan consensus of US political leaders happy to exploit popular reaction to increase their own power and enrich the ruling class via imperialism, extractivism, and objectively racialized exploitation.
Even The Guardian has noticed, or at least allowedNaomi Klein to write about it:
An unspeakably dismal choice is being made before our eyes and without our consent: machines over humans, inanimate over animate, profits over all else. With stunning speed, the big tech megalomaniacs have quietly rolled back their net-zero pledges and lined up by Trump’s side, hellbent on sacrificing this world’s real and precious resources and creativity at the altar of a vampiric, virtual realm. This is the last great heist, and they are getting ready to ride out the storms they themselves are summoning – and they will try to defame and destroy anyone who gets in their way.
Snyder posits that Trump’s administration have weakenedterrorism prevention, and would exploit any resultingattack to consolidate power:
Do not give the present regime the benefit of the doubt after it allows a terrorist attack to take place on American soil. Be skeptical about its account of who is to blame. Insist that Musk-Trump take responsibility. And understand that freedom is the first condition of security. A terrorist attack is no reason to concede anything to this regime. On the contrary: such a failure by Musk-Trump would be one more reason, and a very powerful one, to resist it.
Homestar Back To The Web
Yeah, that’s right Strongbad, we should all go back to a website.
Lets do it. Link to a website! Not just the same four websites!!
We’re gonna check out the sitemap!

Around the Fediverse
Bluesky is cancelling accounts when foreign governments ask them to, and Threads is doing adverts soon. The thing to understand about the corporate public messaging systems is that they do not exist to let you publish or to talk to people. That is not the point of them. That’s at best just the bait laid to lure you into their trap.
They exist to make money for the shareholders.
That’s why Threads exists, that’s why Blockchain Inc invested to keep Bluesky running.
Only one network exists in order to let people communicate as the point and reason for it’s existence. Only one network has no shareholders and no owners. Only one is fighting for the user, not the shareholder.
Here’s some of the best of it this month:
America
@aburka@hachyderm.io is accounting risks:
adding “the president could unconstitutionally decide to double the price of everything made in China for no reason” to every Kickstarter risks and disclosures section from now on
@healyn@normal.style is starting a trade war:
Gonna instigate a trade war between multiple fedi instances. Seems pretty easy
Fediverse
@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org is explaining how he uses Ghost:
I wrote up an article on my personal (Ghost-powered!) blog about some of the work I’ve been doing to integrate our news publication at We Distribute into the Fediverse. This is the culmination of years and years of experiments, and we’re almost to a point where most of our ideas have been realized.

@DarrenNevares@mas.to has an infographic: Why The Far Right fails on Mastodon, they can’t progress here like elsewhere:
So a short infographic I’ve been working based
on the talks I’ve had over the weekend and when the 5 cups of coffee finally left my body.
@lrhodes@merveilles.town notes we are the only social media left:
The good news is that the fediverse doesn’t have to compete with companies like Meta and X because the fediverse is social media, a field those companies have functionally abandoned
‘Mark Zuckerberg Says Social Media Is Over’ https://www.newyorker.com/culture/infinite-scroll/mark-zuckerberg-says-social-media-is-over
CyberSecuirty
@briankrebs@infosec.exchange on the CVE database being defunded:
Finally put together a proper story on this funding debacle for MITRE’s CVE program. “A critical resource that cybersecurity professionals worldwide rely on to identify, mitigate and fix security vulnerabilities in software and hardware is in danger of breaking down. The federally funded, non-profit research and development organization MITRE warned today that its contract to maintain the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) program – which is traditionally funded each year by the Department of Homeland Security – expires on April 16.”
AI fills the internet with slop
@siege@masto.hackers.town tells a story about AI silencing an art community:
For the last 20 years ive been part of a small online modding scene for a very niche sandbox video game where a large part of the communtiy is people of all art ability contributing to produce work for the game either in written, 3d or 2d art form.the introduction of ai generative image work into the community lead to 95% of the human designed 2d and 3d graphic art to stop being produced entirely.
and that effect was because the artists saw how fast the ai slop was produced compared to them spending several hours to make each image.
Their own work was drowned out and often didnt get much comment, or was replied to with the same positive comments that the ai slop got which no longer encouraged them to make more or improve.
It fully destroyed the space artistically. Pretty soon after the game itself replaced a lot of its own art with ai art, the community became a ghost town.
Blackout
@Hex@kolektiva.social tells his blackout story:
We were traveling out of Barcelona when the #SpainBlackout hit. We were actually waiting in line for the train. Power went out and cell service cut around noon. I was able to get wifi from a nearby hotel (I hope room 123 doesn’t mind). I found an outage map for the city, but the map was entirely down. I overheard someone say it was national and found an article about that, but there really wasn’t any info yet.
…
- Always have cash.
- Download maps in advance (you can do this for google maps also, but you can’t route without internet).
- Download translation languages in advance.
- Always have extra water and snacks.
- Pack light so you don’t have to haul massive amounts of luggage everywhere.
- Keep battery packs topped off, where possible.
…
ClimateChange is going to make things like this happen more often, and centralization makes small disasters larger and makes disaster response slower. Deploying a bunch of cops is not a solution to anything.
Covid Gigs?
@conniptions@mastodon.social wants to start a covid safe gig:
I’m sick and tired of being unable to gig, or even go to gigs, due to the lack of COVID cautious events with sensible mitigations (masks, LFTs, ventilation etc)
I’m not the only one, and I know such events are starting to happen in the UK and elsewhere.
Thinking v srsly about putting sth together locally, but first I need to find out more.
So if you know of any COVID cautious music events anywhere in the world, please let me know.
404 Media

Right now things seem pretty buggy but it’s obviously very early. Looking forward to messing around with it and making the product better.
Retro Game
@ajroach42@retro.social wants testers for his game:
Alright! This is a demo of my soon to be released Jupiter’s Ghost Game.
If you are a fan of what we’ve done in the #JupitersGhost universe or if you’ve never heard of #JG but you like #GameBoy stuff, or maybe if you just like #scifi #games, give this a shot.
