Back to Improv as the Robots get Lose - January 2026
I restarted doing some weekly improv stuff, (there will be a show in March you should come)
Also went to a Hitch Hikers Guide show, and explored and rejected the Vivaldi browser.
Meanwhile, everyone’s defecting from the Conservatives,Labour are in scandal, Greens have a great broadcast, and the robots get lose on the internet.
Diary
Improv
So I’m back to doing some improv, with a 8 week course on the mechanics and structure of story.
Seem to be a nice bunch. Everyone with the right energy and fearlessness. Nice diverse range of people.
Steve Roe leading the course. Him and his friend co-founded Hoopla 20 years ago and now its the biggest improv training school in the UK. Seems like a good teacher as you’d expect.
Second session was about Because.
Because because because because because.
Because of the wonderful things he did in the last scene.
We were guided through some “Because Games”, in which scenes are to be causally connected. Each following on from prior scenes. Because that happened, this happened.
He didn’t explicitly mention Pixar’s “Story Spine"until the session I had to skip, but the main loop in Pixar’s story template is “…and because of that…” looping over and over between the introduction, call to adventure, and conclusion.
Causality is what strings a story together, gives it structure an avoids it being just a disconnected dream sequence. This scene is only happening because of the events in the prior scenes. It gives the string of scenes meaning and relevance.
So good fun to drill some of that stuff with the team and end up with sheep infestations and santa claus robot wars among other laughs.
There will be a show on 19th of March. That’ll be about the fifth one I’ve done. Its nice because you get to do some acting type stuff without having to learn any lines 😆
Tickets not yet available, but look here for show tickets once March starts:

Bedroom
Can’t do much on the bedroom until my cash flowimproves but did just have enough to buy a chair
It does indeed tuck under the desk properly.
Phew!
One problem is that the arms aren’t long enough to embed the split keyboard into the arms as planned. So I’ve been mucking about trying to design a suitable arm-extender.
Made a prototype in corrugated plastic and a blender model carefully planning where the screws and straps should go. Looking promising.
But need to collect a few pay-days before much morecan be done.
Hitch Hikers Guide Show
Went out and saw the Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy immersive theatre show at the Riverside in Hammersmith.
It was good fun. Our pub visit and Arthur Dent’s surprise leaving party that Ford threw was interrupted by the Vogons coming to destroy the planet.
Luckily, Ford got the entire pub into the Heart Of Gold and hence to the cargo hold of the Vogon ship.
Songs and dance, audience participation, beautiful costumes and familiar characters. All good fun.
Trouble with a comedy based on a forty year old show though is that the jokes are all entirely predictable and obvious. Which makes it a comedy show without much actual laughs.
And while the Fenchurch in the show was an entirely lovely actress, I always found the character in the books/radio-shows quite annoying and she was too prominent in a 90 minute show.
Good fun, but don’t expect to be rolling in the aisles.
Behemoth
Finished the VR game behemoth, it has some of the best sword-fighting I’ve seen in any VR game. Excellent stuff.
Fighting that dragon was insane, holding on for dearlife to it’s back as it swoops around the sky, tying myself to it so I could fire arrows at it’s weak-points. Great stuff.
Would have finished it months ago but didn’t really have the space to play VR stuff much while the bedroom was being done.
Really good game for getting hot and sweaty and doing exercise and fighting monsters.
Loved it.
Facebook Creep Glasses Rant
I see Facebook are going to be advertising their “AI glasses” at the superbowl. Trying to sell their glasses to athletes.
I gotta tell ya, people wearing Meta’s glasses should be shunned like those google glassholes were.
They should be banned from any public place with their creepy surveillance headsets on. If you see someone wearing them you should harass that person and drive them out of whatever space you are in.
Do not allow constant surveillance to become the norm, especially from that fucking creep zuckerberg.
Same goes for Musk’s surveillance cameras on legs, his “optimus” robots. Do not allow them in your spaces. Do not countenance their existence in your presence. Drive them out. Ostracize anyone you see with them. They must never become normal.
Musk Corp
Speaking of Musk, I see that after he bought Twitter for 40 billion and then merged it with his experimental AI company that has never made any money he’s not sold it to the other company he mostly owns (which exists only due to massive government subsidy) for 250 billion dollars.
This sale based on the ludicrous lie that data-centers might be built in orbit.
It’s a living I guess.
Now that Musk has offloaded Twitter and his AI experiments to SpaceX, he can be sure the government will bail it out when the AI bubble pops. The government’s defence industry depends upon SpaceX for access to space.
This is probably the main reason for the “sale” transferring money from one of Musk’s bank accounts to another of Musk’s bank accounts.
The AI price bubble popping could have wiped out xAI and thus Twitter with it, but now it’s cushioned against that by contracts with a government who can’t afford to allow their only real space access to go bust.
So he can subsidize his failing AI business and his unprofitable media-manipulation efforts at Twitter with his government-protected failing exploding space-rocket project.
All protected by the lie which the media keep repeating uncritically that it makes any sense at all to have data centres in space.
What a great fraud, I mean businessman.
Vivaldi Web Browser
Mozilla released the AI plans.
Okay, okay, I get it. Thanks Mozilla. Seesh.
I wonder if part of the reason that Mozilla are so confused about what their actual user-base want is that all the people who want to turn off the AI bullshit are also the ones who turn off telemetry so the bulk of people with
browser.ml.chat.enabled=false
also have telemetry turned off so are invisible to Mozilla.
🤔
Mozilla think that adding some controls to their settings to allow users to opt out of the AI features is good enough.
No sign of a separate build without them there at all, but at least a switch to disable them, in theory.
They say:
Once configured, the AI preferences will persist across browser updates
Though they do have a history of turning on telemetry over and over again even when you keep turning it off. Or inventing new telemetery for you to turn off each update.
One switch will turn off:
AI-enhanced tab grouping with suggested names,
Which sounds horrifying, but then I don’t reallylike tab groups anyway.
They seem to be suggesting that this is all just for desktop though, and so the Android build will presumably continue to not even have a working about:config at all.
The AI features are “Optional by default” which is a mad thing to say. What?
If you want to turn them off then just flip the “off” switch to the “on” position
😆
I gave Vivaldi a try. They are explicitly against any AI in their browser.
Trouble is, turns out its proprietary!?
Why has everyone been talking about Vivaldi being a sensible replacement for Firefox when it’s not even open source and you can’t install it on Arch?
😬
These chrome “Profiles” aren’t nearly as useful as Firefox’s Containers either. Can’t segregate a tab to it’s own cookie-jar at all. Only entire windows full of tabs.
The annoying side-panel can be hidden but keeps coming back whenever you view the bookmarks or the notes or the ReadList or todo or Translate dialogs etc.
Because they are part of that side panel I guess.
The mail app seems okay, but it’s making up it’s own contacts based on mail in the imap boxes instead of taking them from my nextcloud. Which means I’d not use it. Just continue with Mutt. Probably would just continue with Mutt either way really.
Having the calendar built in is quite nice I guess.
That does sync with the nextcloud calendar so would be useable.
Like Firefox, the “Send Tab To Device” function on Android relies on the notifications system, and so doesn’t work when the phone is in Do Not Disturb. Which makes it annoying for sending what you’re reading to the phone for bed coz the phone is automatically in No-Disturb sleep mode before bedtime for me. That’s an issue with Mozilla too though.
Force dark-mode works okay, but is an overall setting not a per-site setting. Could see having to turn that off and on a lot.
The notes system is really pretty good. It could use a widget for the android homescreen. And indeed widgets for the calendar and readlist and todo list and other panel items.
A RSS reader really should be part of the browser so that’s great. Reluctant to switch from my own self hosted TTRSS now though.
It seems very nice, can be made pretty, has most of the things I use addons for in Firefox built right in there and more besides.
One thing which is annoying about Vivaldi and also Firefox and presumably also all the other Android web browsers is the way the “Add To Homescreen” button works on pages like Mastodon which are Progressive Web Apps.
If you add the shortcut to the homescreen then it opens as a WPA which means the browser stuff is all gone and hidden. No back button. No way to bookmark. No way to launch a link in a new browser window etc.
Ought to be two separate buttons for “Add a link to the homepage” vs “Add this app as an app to the homepage” but there isn’t.
You can get around this by turning on airplane modeand adding a link to the error page to the homescreeen, which then works as a link to the website in the browser, not a WPA app, when you’re online again.
I did this to the links I use with Vivaldi before I realized it’s proprietary and so will not do.
Trying to rebuild them as Firefox links again and sadly something is broken now. Won’t add the error page. Tells me the pixel launcher is crashing.
So I can’t have the old web bookmark links to pages in WPA apps. Boo. 😦
I was quite excited and really on the verge of switching to it for proper until I found it doesn’t have an SteamOS/arch package so can’t be easily installed on the steam machine, and can’t even be built from source there because it turns out isn’t even free software.
Do I need more proprietary software in my life?
Definitely usually try to avoid that. Closed source is worse than unwanted AI. 😔
So I guess sticking with Librewolf for now. Hopefully they can keep the AI agent stuff separated as Mozilla enshitify further without becoming overwhelmed.
Fediverse
Remember when the internet used to be a thing you could use to organize and spread word of your protest and dissatisfaction? It could spark an arab spring or bring down a government.
Now it’s all like, oh, there’s a protest and threat of general strike? So Facebook are suppressing posts from the area and Twitter and demoting anything mentioning the hashtag.
We really should have never let the corporations control the selection algorithms. Not only do they distort it for money from advertisers, they suppressmessages that conflict with their billionaire capitalist owner’s interests in any way at all.
We must decententralize and decorporatize theinternet. Its our only hope.
And it was an eventful month in the Fedi.
Forkiverse Podcast Starts A Server
Quite enjoyed listening to the podcast where the “forkiverse” people documented their starting of a new server.
Best of luck to them. Seems like they’ve filled all those 2000 slots and more very quickly.
So welcome Forkiverse people. Maybe one day all podcasts will have their own fedi server.
New EU site called “W”
Pretty sure I will never register and post on a government-run social forum, even if it wasn’t called “wee”
“Just going to boost this wee” people will say.
“Have you seen the president’s latest wee? It was replied to by government vetted verified adults” they’ll say.
“I was doom-scrolling wee all night” they’ll say
Anna Zeiter, CEO of W, has told Bilanz.ch that W stands for “We.”
Sounds like this “W stands for wee” social media thing isn’t even actually government run. Just some company trying to do a bluesky fork and gather a verified identified user-base for their own private ownership.
Contribute to their private ownership of a giant user database at your own peril I guess.
I know I won’t be.
Seems they will be using At-protocol, meaning"decentralized” Bluesky now has as many asthree instances! (Fediverse has tens of thousands).
Leads me to rant that I was thinking of joining bluesky but I’m confused and overwhelmed trying to determine which instance I should join.
Should I join the W instance? Or the Blacksky instance? Or the bsky-app?
It’s too difficult and confusing to pick an instance so I decided to give up.
Twitter has had it’s robot unconsensuallyundressing users creating fake child sexabuse images and allowing harassment ofit’s (especially female) users.
Yet government still posts there, evenas they threaten to sue it.
Look, it’s quite simple: The government has to post on the child-porn nazi troll misinformation site because that’s where all the child-porn loving nazi trolls are and they want their votes!
It doesn’t matter that the posts which counter to the misinformation are algorithmically suppressed because, um… Because if the mind of even on nazi child-porn loving troll can be changed then magnifying their world-view and indulging their frame of reference will have been worth it?

So farewell then Microsoft Office.
MS Office renames itself to “The Microsoft356 Copilot App”
I haven’t used it really since the 90s.
From this distance: it seems like you just kept getting worse and more exploitative since then and trapped millions of people in abusive relationships with tech.
It made me laugh when you went monthly-payment subscription-only, and then laugh even more when suckers actually ponied up for that.
It’s fun when people say they don’t know how to use Libreoffice, even though Libre is more like the original MS Office (before it was shit) than Office 365 was.
I wish you fare well on your transition to your new identity as “The Microslop 365 Co-dependency Ass” or whatever the new name is.
Good luck in your new task of exploiting people and learning how to replace them in their jobs.
I will not be subscribing to your services.Or newsletter. I will continue to tell people I refuse to accept files in proprietary file formats.
Claude’s Constitution
Asimov wrote his laws of robotics as a dramatic device to show how difficult it is to write laws of robotics. How they always will contradict each other.
His laws are there to illustrate a problem, not as a genuine attempt at the solution. His laws are deliberately wrong.
Anthropic’s constitution released this month is a proper attempt to solve the problem instead.
Surprising that it ends up written in English rather than maths.
Perhaps the robot will translate it into maths later.
There’s a lot of thorny philosophy in it if you assume the premise that a super-intelligent machine can be built, even if known methods can’t build it.
We should do that philosophy whether the premise turns out to be true or false.
Anthropic are doing much better on the AI ethics than openAI. And the business side, and the building actually useful models side.
Zvi has some blogs on the AI community’s reaction to it and analysing it.
Seems long. Might have to be expressed as a meme. 😆
MoltBook
In other AI news, everyone’s talking about the Social Network For AIs, called MoltBook, no humans allowed.
Those AIs are just as stupid as the humans, all flocking to this centralised owned social network that’s bound to enshitify 😆
To judge from Scott’s blog they post mad shit about the nature of robot consciousness and give each other tips on how to best help their dumb humans.
The whole thing has turned out to be half fakedand entirely insecure with malware spreadingbetween all those AIs.

Everyone’s leaving the Conservative party to join Reform.
Robert Jenrick has been sacked as shadow minister on account of the shadow leader thinking he’s thinking of defecting.
Presumably this encourages him to defect really? Even if he wasn’t planning to leave, why stay around in a party that can’t win and is sackingpeople on paranoid presumptions that they will leave?
Seems like all the rats at the Conservative party are jumping ship to Reform. People will be voting Reform at the next election and literally getting the exact same ministers as when they voted Conservative at the last one.
This isn’t like the usual “Vote X, get Y”, where the broken electoral system lets the least popular party in because the popular political wing is divided. This is literally “Vote reform, Reform win, but you get the exact people who were standing as Conservative last time”
Is this really good for Reform? It’s voters are trying to avoid voting Tory, surely? Adding all the old tory ministers to their ranks has to hurt rather than help?
And he did indeed defect. At the exact press conference Farage was earlier today saying wasn’t for a defection announcement.
Sounds like it was a right carcrash.
The incompetence of the 2019 Conservatives is catching you know. Spend too much time with them you become as bungling as they are.
Badenoch said she’s 100% sure no other shadow ministers will convert.
1️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ Percent!
That is quite sure!
I think I’d take that bet. Four years until the next election for it to happen.
Maybe by the end of the month.
Seems like such a crazy thing to say.
💯
And sure enough Suella ‘cruelella’ Braverman has swapped over to Farage’s outfit now too.
Not an actual shadow minister so Badenoch’s “100%” certainty that no ministers will cross over not yet breached.
But Reform looks more and more like it’s just the Tories under a new name. Surely people will see that when in the voting booth?
Won’t they?
Won’t they?
Green Party Broadcast
Glad to see lots of people liking and sharing the Green Party England&Wales broadcast this week. It’s striking.
Hope it’s happening in the corporate spaces too, though presumably the capitalist leaders there suppress it with their algorithms.
Zack is in general doing such a great job of speaking my mind really it’s unreal.
All the other leaders just seem dazed and confused, trying hard to maintain the status quo, ensure that capital power persists and they don’t offend their corporate donors.
Or worse, just blaming the poor and the helplessand threatening that hurting people will solve the problems England and Wales face (it won’t).
Here’s hoping it has some impact and the Green Party make huge progress because the country seems likely to just get worse and worse under any of the other party’s policies and positions.
Labour Deny Burnham
Andy Burnham has been blocked from standing as a candidate for an upcoming parliamentary by-election in Gorton and Denton by Labour’s ruling body.
😆
The Labour party are utterly determined that they will obliterate themselves by proving themselves to be run by an executive committee who will not tolerate anything but extractive neoliberal capitalism,
They are a party against their own members.
Mandelson’s Firing
Starmer’s speech is full of regret, so sorry that he believed the lies of Mandelson.
Now we are expected to trust the judgement of a man who believed the lies of a person known as the Prince Of Darkness in order to appoint him as ambassador to America, precisely because of his relationship with the Epstein and Trump circle.
If not for his relationship with those fuckers, why make him ambassador?
What did he have over the existing ambassador other than his relationship with the whole Epstein crowd?
Nothing.
He was chosen for that position by Starmer exactly because of that relationship which Starmer now pleads he didn’t know about as he was fooled by the lies of the dark prince.
Nope. I don’t buy it. Starmer can still fuck off.
Reading
How To Live Safely In A Science Fiction Universe
Read “How To Live Safely In A Science Fiction Universe” by Charles Yu, a novel about a time-machine repair-man getting stuck in a loop during his search for his father.
First person narrated, in a fictional universe in which you can travel in time but you can’t change anythingabout the past.
It was fun and an easy read, lots of interludes about the physics of fictional universes and explanations of acausal items causing their own existence, including the book itself that you read in your hands.
Its nice if you’d like something with experimental narrative form twisting the usual story format.
Watching
Solar Opposites
Watched Solar Opposites, a cartoon started by Justin Roiland like Rick andMorty with lots in common.
Including Roiland being kicked out after a couple of seasons for his crimes, and being replaced. This time not with an impersonator but just a new more british actor. Stayed pretty much in vibe with his style though.
Four aliens stuck on earth, plus the adventures of the tiny people that one of the aliens shrunk to keep in his wall like an ant farm. And the Silver Cops.
Pretty good fun. Watched the five seasons on Netflix in a couple of weeks. Apparently there’s another if I search or wait.
Interesting how the machine can just keep churning it out even when the lead folksdisappear. That’s the ideal I suppose. Create the show then let it run on without you.

Craig on the American invasion of Venezuela:
“the Americans may be making the same mistake they made in Iran, in believing that decapitation strategy and bombing will spark internal revolution. In Iran, they actually strengthened support for the Government. As of yesterday afternoon, the Bolivarian government in Caracas genuinely did not yet know what had happened, how far there was collusion in the armed forces in Maduro’s kidnap, and whether they still had the control of the army.”
Zack is the only party leader in the UK saying anythingremotely sensible in an era in which America can’t betrusted:
First, we need to disentangle our security apparatus from the United States so that we can be genuinely independent. As an urgent first step, the government should review how we might remove US bases from British soil while maintaining our own security – and retaining the capacity to support our allies in Ukraine. There are currently 13 US military bases in the UK, operated by an estimated 10,000 personnel. If Trump were to take military action against Greenland, we must be able to act swiftly to remove America’s military presence from our country peacefully and efficiently. The government should also cancel its £240m deal with US firm Palantir, signed despite MPs raising serious security concerns about the company.Second, we need to ditch Trident – and fast. Even supporters of nuclear weapons recognise the risks of maintaining a system that relies on the United States.
This is what the world is, rightly, saying about the UK:
The UK is complicit in grave violations of international law and has not only failed to meet its international legal obligations, but has actively breached them. Some British citizens, concerned with justice, international law, and human rights, have peacefully stepped in to challenge their government’s wrongdoing. The state’s response has been to criminalise dissent while presenting repression as democratic self-defence.Let us be clear: proscribing Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation is not an isolated act. It is part of the UK’s broader complicity in Israel’s oppression and genocide, and it functions domestically to silence those who seek to disrupt that complicity.
AI
At the 39C3 event Meridith off of Signal and this other chapexplain the dangers of putting an AI in your operatingsystem.
Cory on the way AI isn’t making any money at all:
There is no way to operate one of Nvidia’s big AI-optimized GPUs without losing money. The owners of these GPUs who have lost the least money are the ones who rushed into buying GPUs without ensuring they’d have electricity to power them, and have been forced to leave their GPUs to age in warehouses. The minute they plug in those GPUs, they’ll start losing money, and the more they use them, the more money they’ll lose.
Ian Dunt is sad the government won’t quit Twitter:
It’s not just irresponsible, short-sighted and immoral to stay on X. It’s simply pathetic. It is very pitiful indeed to watch these major figures in British public life – the Home Secretary, the BBC director general – scramble around in the dirt for a few dozen likes, for the honour of having some anonymous account hurl abuse at you.

Scott Adams
The artist who drew Dilbert died, and mostlypeople talked about his obvious racism in hislatter days. Scott Alexander managed a morecomplimentary but still real obituary:

The corporate web continues to enshitify and censorand ban anyone but the nazis, but there is a placethat isn’t owned by anyone, where free individualsand communities can interact anarchically without leadersor owners.
Here’s some folks things said on it this January.
Venezuela
The story of US relations with Venezuela the past 15 years is that we want their oil, and they sell it to “our enemies” instead, so we have sanctioned the country into the ground and created starving people. We have then repeatedly pointed to those starving people as evidence that Maduro is the new Saddam while manufacturing consent for a war to take their oil. Trump tried to pull the trigger once already but the stew wasn’t ready. Biden furthered the project during his term and now here we are.
Next up will be a VPN ban. Many tech-y people will see that and think “lol yeah well that’s not going to stop me from using a VPN”
A VPN ban isn’t really meant stop you from using one. It means when they catch you doing so, they’ll use the fact you’re using this harmless technology itself as a pretense to lock you up without needing to do any “hard work” (i.e. an investigator’s job) like actually confirming whether you committed a real crime.
Don’t think you won’t be impacted just because you know how to outsmart an ISP filter! This is not a plan to protect children or stop you from consuming adult media. It is a ploy to eventually eliminate ALL freedom of expression and free access to information in the UK.
And the same goes for Chat Control and encrypted messengers, btw

To the surprise of exactly nobody another centralized, closed walled garden that managed to trap millions of people in its network effects is now going to go public on the stock market.
Anyone who was promoting Discord in any way over the last few years helped make this happen.
My comments are littered with folks asking “why is it a problem if your blocklist is public on Bluesky?”
I’m glad you asked.
“Who you block” is a reasonable indicator of your personal alignments. If you block TERFs, you’re likely trans-friendly, if not trans yourself. If you block white supremacists, you’re likely in support of multiculturalism.
If you block government entities, well, you know how this goes.
Do I trust Bluesky to handle that information with care? Hell no.

okay so gather round because the suez crisis is genuinely one of the funniest things that ever happened in geopolitics
so it’s 1956 and britain and france are having a normal one about the suez canal. egypt’s new guy nasser has just nationalized it and they are BIG MAD because that’s Their Canal and they need it for Oil Reasons and also their egos cannot handle a former colony telling them no

They are saying citizens can’t protest in the streets (1st amendment).
They are saying citizens can’t carry a gun if they do protest (2nd amendment).
They are saying citizens and local businesses must feed and house federal agents occupying their city (3rd amendment)
They are saying they don’t need a warrant to enter citizens’ homes (4th amendment)
They are saying they can detain and deport anyone they want without a court hearing (5th amendment)
Our founding fathers made these the top of the list for a reason: without these rights we are living under tyranny.
